Now that you’ve got Voodoo installed, you probably want to get going right away and playing with it. Here are a couple of notes about getting going with Voodoo quickly. Please read the rest of the manual for more details about all of the functionality in Voodoo.
Playing a Voodoo File
To play one of the existing Voodoo files, choose open file from the file menu. Open one of the examples in the ‘Voodoo Kits’ folder in the ‘Voodoo Folder’ you just installed.
Play individual drum pads by clicking on them with the mouse, or using the ‘1’ through ‘9’, or ‘F1’ through ‘F14’ keys.
Start the MIDI sequence playback by pressing the space bar.
Stop the MIDI playback by pressing the space bar.
Pretty simple!
Changing the Look of the User Interface
Changing the way Voodoo looks is a snap! Simply try out a new theme from the Theme menu in Voodoo. If you’re a ‘PICT’, ‘ppat’, ‘cicn’ kind-of person, you can easily create your own themes to add to Voodoo. Check out the Appendix about Voodoo Themes at the end of this manual.
Importing a Standard MIDI File
We’ve provided a bunch of Standard MIDI files to show you how the import functionality works. Create a new file by selecting ‘New’ from the File menu. Click on the pattern list in the upper left of the Voodoo window. Now, choose ‘Import Pattern…’ from the File menu. Select one of the Standard MIDI files we’ve included in the ‘Voodoo SMFs’, or one of your own. That’s it!
You can see what is in the pattern you just imported by clicking on the pattern name in the pattern list, and then select a track from the column in the middle left of the Voodoo window at the bottom. The MIDI events should be shown in the event list in the middle right.
Alternatively, you can drag and drop a Standard MIDI file from the desktop to the pattern list. This is often a quicker way of importing patterns.
Importing a Sample
Importing samples is pretty straight-forward as well. Create a new file by selecting ‘New’ from the File menu. Click on any of the fourteen drum pads so that the sample display is shown at the bottom of the Voodoo window. Click on the sample display so that ‘Import Sample…’ is enabled in the File menu. Choose ‘Import Sample…’ and select an AIFF, Unity DS-1, or audio CD file (check out the examples in the ‘Voodoo Samples’ folder). Once the sample is imported, the display should be updated to display the current sample for the currently selected drum pad.
Click on the sample play button at the very bottom of the window below the sample display to listen to the sample.
Alternatively, you can drag and drop a sample from the desktop to the sample display for quicker imports.
